REGO is a proposal for an original dance piece, inspired by the life and work of artist Paula Rego (1935-2022).
Each of the scenes, based on five of Rego’s pictures, has been devised to tell a story of conformity and transgression, particularly as it relates to the performance of gender. Referencing Rego’s upbringing on the Iberian Peninsula, the piece is set in an ambiguous coastal location, where large sea walls demarcate the space. These monolithic objects form a hostile environment for the bodies on stage.
As the walls move throughout the piece, so do the spatial rules, which are continually broken and reconfigured.
